Airport Development & Air Service Enhancement

The Regional Air Service Enhancement Committee (RAISE), composed of representatives from each Peninsula locality and staffed by the EDA, continued with its commitment and financial support to help attract and expand air service opportunities at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Several existing carriers enhanced their service offerings during 2016. Supported by RAISE, the Airport enacted a grounds operations support services function as a tool available to help support all carriers. The Authority, as fiscal agent for RAISE, approved entering into an agreement with Elite Airways for new service to New York/Newark and Islip/Long Island, and possibly other locations, at the recommendation of RAISE, providing much-needed direct service to these markets. Under the leadership of the City Manager as Chair and board member of the Peninsula Airport Commission, the Airport continued to see significant improvements and aggressively pursued air service opportunities throughout 2016.
