Newport News Redevelopment & Housing Authority Collaboration
City and Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority (Housing Authority) staff participated in several initiatives spearheaded by the City Manager’s office, including a program to assemble and address vacant lot issues throughout the southern part of the City, facilitation of an RFP to seek out private developers to build affordable housing in the community and development of a workforce home ownership incentive program. They also participated in an EPA Building Blocks Workshop held in Newport News in March, and facilitated an Environmental Justice Forum in September that brought in personnel from various federal agencies to share information with the community.
In collaboration with Development staff, the Housing Authority continued efforts to maintain and improve affordable housing stock throughout the City via Multi-Family Housing Revenue Bond Financing facilitation and providing support letters to the Department of Housing and Community Development for a financing package. Other Housing Authority collaborative accomplishments include Kline Building façade improvement to continue beautification along Jefferson Avenue, continuation of Phase III of Marshall Courts apartment complex renovations, to include the community recreation center, completion of the final phase of Madison Heights single-family homes development and finalization of floor plans for a multi-phased new house construction project in the Jefferson Park neighborhood.
