Peninsula Council for Workforce Development
The Peninsula Council for Workforce Development (Workforce Council) continues to be a vital partner when it comes to meeting the workforce development needs of Newport News’ businesses and citizens. In 2016, the Workforce Council provided critical support for a number of job fairs for individual companies, as well as job fairs highlighting the needs of multiple employers. In many cases, staff provides employers with pre-screening of applicants, so that participating companies can enjoy a more streamlined experience, which results in a higher number of placements with fewer personnel hours expended. The organization also offers access to a variety of training services and career education opportunities for the unemployed and underemployed in Newport News and the surrounding areas.
This year the Workforce Council continued to serve as one of the main connections between local school systems, the community college system and employers. This connection is critical to ensuring that established career pathways and certification programs continue to meet the current and emerging needs of the business community, while also putting our young people on a path to future career success.
