Lidl, a Germany-based international supermarket chain, announced plans in 2014 for an aggressive, new-to-market, United States expansion and is planning to invest over $200 million in Virginia. Construction in Newport News in two locations began in 2016, one of which involved acquisition of a 5.6-acre wooded parcel located near the corner of Jefferson Avenue and City Center Boulevard in Oyster Point of Newport News. The Authority approved the use in 2015 necessary for the development of a grocery store, as well as final site and landscape plans in 2016. Lidl’s second location is under construction on a 4.39-acre parcel on Warwick Boulevard. Lidl sells private label and discounted goods, such as meat, produce and houseware items, and the Authority welcomes especially the numerous employment opportunities these two stores will bring the community.
