Virginia Department of Transportation I-64 Widening
Construction began October 26th on the second of three segments to widen Interstate 64 in Newport News, James City County and York County. The second segment, which was awarded to Allan Myers, VA Inc., will add a lane and shoulder in each direction for more than seven miles from one mile west of Route 199 Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) to where the Segment I project ends at 0.54 miles east of Route 238 Yorktown Road (exit 247). One travel lane and one shoulder lane will be added in each direction within the existing median. Initial work will include shoulder strengthening beginning in the eastbound direction, followed by similar work in the westbound direction. The existing travel lanes will be rehabilitated. Nine existing bridges and six major box culverts within the project limits will also be rehabilitated and widened.
The I-64 Capacity Improvements Segment II project will facilitate mobility, enhance safety, provide more lanes for evacuation, reduce congestion and extend the life of the state’s transportation network. The project completion date is summer 2019, with the total cost for this phase at $189.7 million.
